Council Reports: September 2004, February 2005, September 2005, February 2006, March 2007
Background & History of SAIWA Division
Although SAIWA is
one of the most recent additions to the Divisions of WISA it does in fact
pre-date WISA itself. SAIWA
(then the Southern African Industrial Water Association) started life as
SABICA (the South African Biological Induced Corrosion Association).
This was an interest group formed by industrial water scientists
working for Eskom, Iscor, Sastech, the Mining industry and Water Treatment
companies who came together to share information on the phenomenon of
Microbiologically Induced Corrosion.
In 1985, Meryl
Nixon from Eskom, Dr Peter Stegmann from Sastech and Lionel Hughes from
Buckman Laboratories met up at an International Conference on MIC being
held in Washington D.C. With
encouragement from Dr Dick Lutey from Memphis (a world expert on MIC), the
South Africans agreed to form an interest group on their return home.
By July 1986 a Committee had been formed and planning was underway
for "The First Southern African Symposium on Biological Fouling and
Corrosion in Industrial Water Systems".
This Symposium was held in Johannesburg (September 1986) and opened
by Dr Daan Toerien then Chief Director: National Institute for Water
Research. Scientists working
within the field of industrial water treatment presented fifteen papers.
During the discussion held afterwards, the comment was made that as
there was no professional or technical body looking after the interests of
industrial water scientists (this was in the days of the South African
Branch of the IWPC), perhaps SABICA should broaden its horizons to include
all matters related to industrial water treatment.
All present unanimously agreed and after this one symposium SABICA
became SAIWA.
During November
1986 Mr Pressly (who was by then serving on the SAIWA committee) was
approached by Mr J Abbott, who was leading the IWPC Working Group on Mine
Water, to see if discussions could be held on areas of mutual interest.
In December a representative of the IWPC was invited to attend a
SAIWA committee meeting. He
informed this meeting that there was some concern in the IWCP that SAIWA
might be overlapping with the aims of the IWPC.
Contact with the IWPC was maintained up to and after the formation
of WISA with SAIWA carrying on looking after the interests of industrial
water scientists.
In the meantime
SAIWA continued to run very successful annual symposia from 1987 through
to 1992. These symposia were
supplemented with technical evenings and workshops.
By 1993 it was becoming difficult to organize symposia with the
help of a few dedicated members working part time and SAIWA instead
elected to assist with the Industrial Water sessions at Afriwater and the
WISA biennial conference. It
had also become obvious that the place for SAIWA was within the WISA
umbrella as the Industrial Water Division.
This was accomplished in November 1996.
After a 'dormant'
period, the way forward for SAIWA as a Division of WISA was re-evaluated
during a six-month period (2002/2003), resulting in a new mission and set
of objectives. Similarly, as
this Division has a long and rich history, it was deemed appropriate to
continue using the well-known acronym (SAIWA) as well as the familiar
logo. After the completion
and updating of some administrative duties, the Management Committee
committed to being more active in planning activities such as technical
evenings, making use of exhibition opportunities, open days on practical
industrial applications and technology, the distribution of two
newsletters per year, etc.
Technical issues
The
first technical meeting held by SAIWA following the 'dormant' period and
under the new chairmanship of Renée van Hoeve, was a joint meeting with
the Corrosion Institute of
Southern Africa
at
Science
Park
, Kelvin,
Johannesburg
on
Thursday 08 May 2003
.
Professor Karl Heinz Riedel from the Potchefstroom University of
Higher Christian Education gave a presentation titled: 'Fouling scaling
and corrosion in cooling towers using an industrial effluent as cooling
water: Analysis of microbial community dynamics: A case study'.
This cooperation between CorrISA and SAIWA dates
back to before SAIWA became the Industrial Water Division due to similar
interests such as microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC).
After this initial meeting, CorrISA members said that they looked
forward to the joint meeting becoming an annual event.
SAIWA/CorrISA
Joint Meeting:
Saiwa held a
joint meeting with the Corrosion Institute of
Southern Africa
at
Science
Park
, Kelvin Johannesburg on
Thursday 13 May 2004
.
The speaker
for the evening was Keith Norcott from ESKOM who presented a paper titled
"Corrosion Protection of Fire Protection Systems".
The paper highlighted the non-destructive techniques
being employed by ESKOM to monitor the corrosion taking place in the fire
protection ring mains at various ESKOM sites. The meeting was well
attended by about thirty SAIWA & CorrISA members.
The speaker
was thanked by CorrISA president Professor Chris Pistorius who hoped that
cooperation between SAIWA and CorrISA would be on-going.
Refreshments were sponsored by
Suid-Chemie.

joint meeting held at

SAIWA
was also active between these two technical evenings.
At
the Afriwater Exhibition (15 - 17 August 2003) SAIWA had a moving banner
with sound displayed on the plasma screen at the WISA stand. The banner
covered the activities of SAIWA and the types of industry that SAIWA
members were active in.
On
19 November 2003
SAIWA held a one-day
Conference on Preparation of Water for Industrial Use at the Maccauvlei
Training & Conference Centre outside Vereeniging.
The day was a great success with a very large attendance.
Thanks go to Don Watt-Pringle of Improchem and his subcommittee
for organizing this event. Papers
presented during the day were as follows:
Natural organic matter
and the impact on Eskom Plant

The
SAIWA committee would like to repeat this successful event during 2004 and
provisional dates of 6 October 2004
have been booked at Maccauvlei. The
committee would like to take this opportunity to issue a call for papers
for presentation at this one day Conference.
