An Illustrated Guide to Basic Sewage Purification Operations

Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, First Edition 2002

Water Services include water supply as well as appropriate sanitation. Services refers to the provision of infrastructure as well as the sustainable operation and maintenance of the associated systems. The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry has an obligation to support municipalities with their constitutional role to provide water services to all citizens. One way in which the Department can assist is by developing the skills of municipal staff. In this regard, the Department has identified the need to train on-site staff for the proper operation and maintenance of sewage works - essential components of many sanitation systems - and therefore developed the guide: An Illustrated Guide to Basic Sewage Purification Operations. The first edition is aimed at entry grade attendants who operate smaller wastewater treatment facilities. Particular attention has been given to the needs of those who have limited literacy skills. Important concepts and correct operational procedures have been explained in simple terms and cartoon illustrations. This guide emphasises the importance of the operator’s job and providing services tyo communities.

This guide is intended for use by: Water Care operators and attendants to apply the basic operating activities relating to a sewage treatment works effectively and to develop an understanding of why these tasks are important in the overall functioning of the works; water care managers to provide guidance in basic sewage treatment operations to staff, and Educators to develop an understanding of routine operation and maintenance activities of a sewage treatment works.

The Guide is available free of charge from:
