NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP: - 28 March 2003

NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP: - 28 March 2003

WHAT IS IT AND WHY SHOULD NUTRIENTS BE MANAGED?

This was a combined effort between the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and the WISA Nutrient Management Division. Approximately 40 people attended the seminar and were welcomed by Dr. Eustina Musvoto (Chairperson of the Committee). Following on this, Mr. Sakkie van der Westhuizen then in his opening speech, stressed the importance of closer working relations between DWAF and WISA.

The speakers of the day were:

1.       Dr. Dan Walmsley who presented a talk under the title: “A strategy for the management of Eutrophication in South Africa, Situational Analysis”, which was followed by questions and discussions. The report will be made available to all delegates as soon as comments have been included.

2.       Ms. Carin van Ginkel who gave a presentation entitled: “National Eutrophication

Monitoring Programme, Implementation Manual”.

3.       Mr. Nico Rossouw who gave a brief introduction about the WRC project entitled: “Introduction to the project”: "Development of a guide to conduct Eutrophication assessment studies for rivers, lakes and wetlands"

It was felt that the seminar was a great success and it is noted that many of the delegates expressed a great interest in having a second meeting of this nature.

Regards

Dr Eustina Musvoto
