CREATION OF ATTENDANCE FUND

The Board of WISA approved, at its meeting on 16 August, that an Attendance Fund be created. This Fund will only become functional at the beginning of 2002 to allow the budgeting process to make allowance for the Fund. This Fund will function separately from the Bursars Fund and co-exist with it. In the beginning the Fund will be sourced through WISA’s operational budget, but it is the intention that it will, in time, attract enough donations to permit the Fund to be operated from the interest generated by investments dedicated to the Fund. Potential donors can thus be assured that their donations are secured in a dedicated Fund and that only the Attendance Fund can use the capital and interest.

Should any member know of any possible donor source that can be approached to invest in the Fund please inform us, either through your local WISA structures such as Branches and Divisions, or directly to ceo@wisa.org.za.

The main aim of this Fund is to enable junior teaching/training staff, who ordinarily would not be funded by their employers to attend such conferences, workshops, and seminars. The Fund is purposely focused on people who would be able through their teaching/training occupations to empower others as well, thus creating a multiplier effect for the investment by WISA.

Another requirement of the Fund is that the applicant needs to secure additional funding to attend such an event as the Attendance Fund will only become involved as a co-sponsor and will not bear all the costs of attendance. It is felt that in circumstances where an applicant feels attendance is of sufficient value to justify approaching the Fund that they also need to illustrate their commitment through securing complementary funding.

Another factor is that the Attendance Fund needs to use its available resources as judiciously as possible to assist as many applicants as possible.

Another big difference between the Bursars Fund and the Attendance Fund is that the attendance Fund will only consider applications from WISA members.

The necessary application forms for the Attendance Fund are available from the WISA office. All Branches and Divisions will also be supplied with sets of this documentation from where they will be able to supply applicants in their immediate vicinity.
