10th International Water Distribution Systems (WDSA)
Conference 2008. 17-20 August 2008. Kruger
National Park
The Executive Board has agreed to
endorse the above conference, which is being organised
by Prof Kobus van Zyl from University of Johannesburg
(UJ) and who is also the Chair: SAICE Water
Engineering Division and a WISA Member. It is a
significant honour for the SA Water Sector since this
is the first WDSA conference to happen outside the
USA.

1.6 Dam Monitoring & Surveillance Course. 15 – 18

SANCOLD (South African National
Committee on Large Dams) and the Department of Civil
Engineering, University of Stellenbosch will be
holding a Course on Dam Monitoring and Surveillance at
the Protea Hotel, TechnoPark, Stellenbosch, Monday to
Thursday 15 – 18 September 2008 (3.5 days). An
interesting program lined up for delegates. The
two-day technical programme (15 to 16 September
2008) is filled with presentations on applications
of instrumentation to measure field performance,
recent research into new instrument types and new
applications, what can be expected from technological
advances in the near future, and quantifying the
benefits of monitoring systems. Several speakers who
are spearheading new developments in monitoring
technology have been invited to demonstrate what is
possible with today’s tools.
On 17 September 2008 a technical
Dam Safety Surveillance tour to the recently completed
Berg Water and Roode-elsberg dams is included in the
programme and a half-day Workshop is offered on
Thursday 18 September 2008 by leading
authorities on various topics related to the practical
aspects of instrumentation.

National Wetlands Indaba 2008. 28-31 October 2008.
Skukuza Camp / Kruger National Park
Call for abstracts -
The National Wetlands Indaba 2008 will
focus on both the benefits that humans derive from
wetlands, such as the provision of food, clean water,
and pharmaceuticals, as well as the negative impacts
of wetland mismanagement such as the impairment of
human health and even the loss of human life because
of water-related diseases, floods and water. Space is
limited to 200 delegates for this year, so register
early and remember to book your accommodation as soon
as possible, either at Skukuza or outside the park,
preferably not at other camps within the park.

1.12 Water Loss 2009.

The Conference is the fourth event in a
series of IWA water loss reduction specialist
conferences, following the "Leakage 2007" that is at
present being held in Bucharest, Romania. The Water
Loss Task Force chose Cape Town, South Africa, as the
location for Water Loss 2009. It was brought to the
African Region in order to address the need for water
loss reduction in Africa as well as the strengthening
the ties of the IWA with the African water utilities.

2.4 United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLGA)

On 15 May 2008 the Chief Executive met
with Mr Gordon Gleimius of dti wrt to a 4-day Trade
Mission to the Zaragoza 2008 International Expo
(exhibition), where he requested WISA assistance in
identifying companies that wish to attend the Expo in
Spain.
Basically the proposal is as follows:
§ The
dti is looking for 10 water-related companies that
wish to export their products all over the world (not
just Spain), undertake joint-ventures with foreign
companies, trade beyond SA borders etc
§ If
there are more than 10 suitable companies wishing to
join the trade mission, the size of the trade mission
may be increased
§ Itinerary:

– Fly to from JHB

– Day in Zaragoza

8 Sept 08
– Day at Expo

9 Sept 08
– Day at Expo

dti will pay up to R13 000 per air ticket, more
than that is for the company’s account
§ Company
representatives are given a R1 800 living allowance
per day (accommodation, meals and taxis etc)
§ An
excess baggage allowance of R1 000 is allowed
for pamphlets, samples etc
§ Accommodation
is only required for four nights ie 7, 8, 9 & 10 Sept
08
§ The
dti will probably arrange a bus at its cost to
transport representatives to the Expo (a saving for
representatives)
§ Sponsorship
is on a reimbursive basis, ie companies pay up front
and then claim back expenditure
§ Company
representatives may extend their stay in Europe/ fly
elsewhere but dti would like the participants to
arrive at Zaragoza at the same time
§ The
dti will set up at least 2 appointments per day per
company
