1.3 University of Stellenbosch, Department Civil Engineering, Short course on Water and Sewer Network Master Planning. 18-20 June 2008. Gericke Library auditorium, University of Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch, South Africa.

This is the first course in water and sewer network master planning following significant advances in the field over the past few years. The course covers topics such as the master planning process, financing and managing a master planning project, hydraulic network modelling, as well as asset management and GIS integration.

The course has been awarded 3 x CPD points

1.4 10th International Water Distribution Systems (WDSA) Conference 2008. 17-20 August 2008. Kruger National Park

The Executive Board has agreed to endorse the above conference, which is being organised by Prof Kobus van Zyl from University of Johannesburg (UJ) and who is also the Chair: SAICE Water Engineering Division and a WISA Member. It is a significant honour for the SA Water Sector since this is the first WDSA conference to happen outside the USA.

1.5 T&M 2008 Conference. 25 - 27 August 2008. Misty Hills Conference Center (Muldersdrift) (TBC)

The NLA wishes to advise that the First Announcement and Call for Papers has been posted on the NLA web site and is available for download. The technical committee would like to encourage everyone to consider making an abstract submission for either  a Paper, Poster or Tutorial.

Attendees to the conference continue to remind us that they want practical and industry related information, since the conference is seen as an extremely valuable learning as well as networking opportunity.

Interest from outside of South Africa is encouraged and it was significant that at last years event we had over 15 countries represented, giving this event a truly international flavour and an aspect that we hope will grow in the future. 1.6 Dam Monitoring & Surveillance Course. 15 – 18 September 2008. Protea Hotel, TechnoPark, Stellenbosch

SANCOLD (South African National Committee on Large Dams) and the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Stellenbosch will be holding a Course on Dam Monitoring and Surveillance at the Protea Hotel, TechnoPark, Stellenbosch, Monday to Thursday 15 – 18 September 2008 (3.5 days). An interesting program lined up for delegates. The two-day technical programme (15 to 16 September 2008) is filled with presentations on applications of instrumentation to measure field performance, recent research into new instrument types and new applications, what can be expected from technological advances in the near future, and quantifying the benefits of monitoring systems. Several speakers who are spearheading new developments in monitoring technology have been invited to demonstrate what is possible with today’s tools.

On 17 September 2008 a technical Dam Safety Surveillance tour to the recently completed Berg Water and Roode-elsberg dams is included in the programme and a half-day Workshop is offered on Thursday 18 September 2008 by leading authorities on various topics related to the practical aspects of instrumentation.

1.9 National Wetlands Indaba 2008. 28-31 October 2008. Skukuza Camp / Kruger National Park
Call for abstracts -
The National Wetlands Indaba 2008 will focus on both the benefits that humans derive from wetlands, such as the provision of food, clean water, and pharmaceuticals, as well as the negative impacts of wetland mismanagement such as the impairment of human health and even the loss of human life because of water-related diseases, floods and water. Space is limited to 200 delegates for this year, so register early and remember to book your accommodation as soon as possible, either at Skukuza or outside the park, preferably not at other camps within the park. Accommodation is limited so register early!

1.10 72nd annual IMESA conference.  29 – 31 October 2008. Sand du Plessis Theatre Complex, Bloemfontein

The conference will concentrate on knowledge sharing and delegates can earn CPD points. The theme for this year is “Innovation – the Road to Service Excellence”, intended to cover innovation on all areas of municipal engineering that can make a contribution towards knowledge sharing.

Prospective authors wishing to present an oral and/or poster presentation at the conference are invited to submit an abstract on the abovementioned theme under one of the following session headings:

1.12 Water Loss 2009. 26-29 April 2009. Cape Town, South Africa

The Conference is the fourth event in a series of IWA water loss reduction specialist conferences, following the "Leakage 2007" that is at present being held in Bucharest, Romania. The Water Loss Task Force chose Cape Town, South Africa, as the location for Water Loss 2009. It was brought to the African Region in order to address the need for water loss reduction in Africa as well as the strengthening the ties of the IWA with the African water utilities.

1.13 International WISA Membrane Technology Conference 2009. 13-15 May 2009. Western Cape

The WISA Membrane Technology Division (WISA MTD) in association with the European Membrane Society (EMS) will be hosting this 2½ day conferences as well as a ½ day technical tour. WISA MTD is the only MTD association in South Africa and has been arranging conferences, symposia and workshops over the past 12 years.

2.3 1st International Conference on Technologies & Strategic Management of Sustainable

2.4 United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLGA) Congress. 7-11 July 2008. Accra

International Convention Centre, Ghana

Under the theme “Leadership for local governance and development in Africa”, the Congress will focus on the role of local leaders in promoting the well-being of populations in African villages, towns and cities through a sound management of local government.  The question of Africa’s decision-making and its impact on the management of cities, towns and villages; the reasons for Africa’s glaring disparities in development in the five regions and how these can be addressed; the promotion of stakeholder participation and dialogue with civil society, consistent with the spirit of the Charter of the UCLGA; and Africa’s true and total liberation in addressing poverty and development challenges in the continent will be tackled at the UCLGA Congress.  WISA members are encouraged to attend as WISA has signed an MOU with the UCLGA to promote cooperation for mutual benefit. 2.5 4th IWA Young Water Professionals International Conference. 16-18 July 2008. Berkeley, USA

The Conference will provide a forum for young researchers and professionals working in water and wastewater research, technology and management to present their work and meet their peers from all over the world. It will consist of papers and posters presentations, career development workshops for all sectors of the water/ wastewater industry and unparalleled networking opportunities.

2.11 Expo Zaragoza 2008. 14 June - 14 September 2008. Zaragoza, Spain

On 15 May 2008 the Chief Executive met with Mr Gordon Gleimius of dti wrt to a 4-day Trade Mission to the Zaragoza 2008 International Expo (exhibition), where he requested WISA assistance in identifying companies that wish to attend the Expo in Spain.

Basically the proposal is as follows:

§    The dti is looking for 10 water-related companies that wish to export their products all over the world (not just Spain), undertake joint-ventures with foreign companies, trade beyond SA borders etc

§    If there are more than 10 suitable companies wishing to join the trade mission, the size of the trade mission may be increased

§    Itinerary:

o         6 Sept 08 – Fly to from JHB

o         7 Sept 08 – Day in Zaragoza

o         8 Sept 08 – Day at Expo

o         9 Sept 08 – Day at Expo

o         10Sept 08 – ½ day at Expo, Fly to Madrid

o         11Sept 08 – Day in Madrid, Fly to JHB

§    The dti will pay up to R13 000 per air ticket, more than that is for the company’s account

§    Company representatives are given a R1 800 living allowance per day (accommodation, meals and taxis etc)

§    An excess baggage allowance of R1 000 is allowed for pamphlets, samples etc

§    Accommodation is only required for four nights ie 7, 8, 9 & 10 Sept 08

§    The dti will probably arrange a bus at its cost to transport representatives to the Expo (a saving for representatives)

§    Sponsorship is on a reimbursive basis, ie companies pay up front and then claim back expenditure

§    Company representatives may extend their stay in Europe/ fly elsewhere but dti would like the participants to arrive at Zaragoza at the same time

§    The dti will set up at least 2 appointments per day per company
