 |
have their names added to the regular electronic
conference notifications (to over 6 000
people internationally) |

also welcome funding towards the running of the conference without designating
it to a specific aspect/item. Such funding organisations would be called

THE YOUNG WATER
PROFESSIONALS REGIONAL CONFERENCES
The
upcoming Young Water Professionals (YWPs) conference will take place in July
2011 at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria. The conference is
organised by the Southern African YWPs under the auspices of the International
Water Association (IWA) and the Water Institute of Southern Africa (WISA). The
2011 conference follows on from the first conference in this series which was
held in January 2010. That conference attracted 330 keen young professionals in
the water industry, most of whom were aged 25-30, and was the largest YWP
Conference held in the world to date.
BACKGROUND
The YWPs Programme
was created to counteract a perceived loss of knowledge brought about by the
impending retirement in the water industry. The YWP Programme provides a range
of activities, services and initiatives to young professionals and students and
connects with employers, academic institutions and other professional
associations to ensure that the future needs of the sector are understood and
addressed and that inter-generational dialogue is created to form links between
senior professionals of the sector and the incoming young professionals. The
programme includes the following aims:
 |
Connecting people in order to provide opportunities for YWPs to meet
and communicate. |
 |
Career development opportunities for young water professionals
through the organisation of workshops and online initiatives. |
 |
Sector support to help employers with the recruitment and retention
of YWPs. |
 |
Programme development to ensure that the programme remains relevant
to the needs of YWPs. |
 |
Engagement of YWPs in IWA and WISA programmes and other water related
initiatives. |
ANTICIPATED
PARTICIPATION
The 1st conference in this
series was held in January 2010 and attended by 330 delegates - we believe we
will easily exceed this number and are aiming to attract between 400 and 500
students and young professionals (who are under the age of 35, or who received
their qualifications less than five years ago) working in the water and
wastewater sector in South Africa or other African countries. These YWPs come
from the following backgrounds:
 |
Provincial & national water
departments |
 |
Water engineers, managers &
educators |
 |
Universities |
 |
Water & social scientists,
biologists & hydrologists |
 |
Resource economists & management
agencies |
 |
Representatives of water boards &
industry |
 |
Policy makers, consultants,
stakeholders & relevant NGOs |
CONFERENCE
PROGRAMME
This conference will include
invited plenary and keynote presentations, parallel sessions with oral
presentations, a round table discussion, poster sessions, two social functions,
a Recruitment and Exhibition Hall and a knowledge
café.
MAILING
LIST
The conference utilises a master
mailing list of over 6 000 individual e-mail addresses of people,
organisations and associations in the water industry in South Africa and other
SADC countries. Conference notifications will be sent out regularly between now
and the conference to everyone on this list. Sponsoring organisations will have
their names added to these notifications as they come 'on
board'.
